Ivanka's Fashion Missteps: Outfits That Sparked Controversy
Ivanka Trump’s "60 Minutes" Appearance

In November 2016, just months after the controversy surrounding the RNC, Ivanka Trump made a high-profile appearance on 60 Minutes alongside her family, where she wore a $10,800 "Metropolis Diamond Bangle" from her own jewelry collection. During the interview, when Lesley Stahl asked if Donald Trump's controversial campaign had hurt the Trump brand, Ivanka responded, “I don’t think it matters. This is so much more important. And more serious… That’s the focus.”
While Ivanka’s choice of jewelry didn’t initially stir much controversy, the marketing that followed caused an uproar. Shortly after the interview aired, Monica Marder, former vice president of sales for Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry, sent out a press release to journalists promoting the bracelet. The release, which read "Style Alert: Ivanka Trump wearing her favorite bangle from the 'Metropolis' collection on 60 Minutes," encouraged journalists to share the information with clients.
The attempt to capitalize on the moment quickly backfired. The public reacted negatively, with some accusing the White House of using its platform for commercial gain. New York Times reporter Eric Lipton criticized the move on Twitter, saying, “White House as QVC. It has started.” In response to the backlash, Abigail Klem, who had been president of the Ivanka Trump brand, told NBC News that the email was sent by a marketing staff member who was simply following established protocols, noting that many within the company were still adjusting to the post-election environment.
